BE: Parasol Protectorate/Alexia Tarabotti Series by Gail Carriger Discussion

bookish escape Graph 3

Steampunk has really been making a name for itself lately and one series that caught my eye a little while ago was Gail Carriger’s Parasol Protectorate/Alexia Tarabotti. The first book, Soulless, is fantastic and not only me, but a lot of people have given rave reviews and I keep telling Jackie that she needs to try it out.

Jackie, me and Bea (from Beas Book Nook) are going to drive Jackie crazy and show her what she’s been missing.

Are you a fan of the series? What is it that you like about Alexia Tarabotti?  What is going on with her and Lord Maccon? Have you been wanting to talk about this very hot series?  If so, then join Jackie (from Literary Escapism), Bea (from Beas Book Nook) and I while we discuss this amazing series at Talk Shoe

GCarriger-Soulless

Soulless

Alexia Tarabotti is laboring under a great many social tribulations. First, she has no soul. Second, she’s a spinster whose father is both Italian and dead. Third, she was rudely attacked by a vampire, breaking all standards of social etiquette.

Where to go from there? From bad to worse apparently, for Alexia accidentally kills the vampire — and then the appalling Lord Maccon (loud, messy, gorgeous, and werewolf) is sent by Queen Victoria to investigate.

With unexpected vampires appearing and expected vampires disappearing, everyone seems to believe Alexia responsible. Can she figure out what is actually happening to London’s high society? Will her soulless ability to negate supernatural powers prove useful or just plain embarrassing? Finally, who is the real enemy, and do they have treacle tart?

SOULLESS is a comedy of manners set in Victorian London: full of werewolves, vampires, dirigibles, and tea-drinking.

Warning: The last book, Heartless, has been out since July, so we will be focusing on the series.  Meaning, spoilers are going to happen. We’ll try to keep the hardcore spoilers to a minimum, but there are no guarantees.

Haven’t read the series yet? What are you waiting for?! Here are the books, in order:

GCarriger-Changeless

Changeless

Alexia Tarabotti, the Lady Woolsey, awakens in the wee hours of the mid-afternoon to find her husband, who should be decently asleep like any normal werewolf, yelling at the top of his lungs. Then he disappears – leaving her to deal with a regiment of supernatural soldiers encamped on her doorstep, a plethora of exorcised ghosts, and an angry Queen Victoria.

But Alexia is armed with her trusty parasol, the latest fashions, and an arsenal of biting civility. Even when her investigations take her to Scotland, the backwater of ugly waistcoats, she is prepared: upending werewolf pack dynamics as only the soulless can.

She might even find time to track down her wayward husband, if she feels like it.

GCarriger-Blameless

Blameless

Quitting her husband’s house and moving back in with her horrible family, Lady Maccon becomes the scandal of the London season.

Queen Victoria dismisses her from the Shadow Council, and the only person who can explain anything, Lord Akeldama, unexpectedly leaves town. To top it all off, Alexia is attacked by homicidal mechanical ladybugs, indicating, as only ladybugs can, the fact that all of London’s vampires are now very much interested in seeing Alexia quite thoroughly dead.

While Lord Maccon elects to get progressively more inebriated and Professor Lyall desperately tries to hold the Woolsey werewolf pack together, Alexia flees England for Italy in search of the mysterious Templars. Only they know enough about the preternatural to explain her increasingly inconvenient condition, but they may be worse than the vampires — and they’re armed with pesto.

GCarriger-Heartless

Heartless

Lady Alexia Maccon, soulless, is at it again, only this time the trouble is not her fault. When a mad ghost threatens the queen, Alexia is on the case, following a trail that leads her deep into her husband’s past. Top that off with a sister who has joined the suffragette movement (shocking!), Madame Lefoux’s latest mechanical invention, and a plague of zombie porcupines and Alexia barely has time to remember she happens to be eight months pregnant.

Will Alexia manage to determine who is trying to kill Queen Victoria before it is too late? Is it the vampires again or is there a traitor lurking about in wolf’s clothing? And what, exactly, has taken up residence in Lord Akeldama’s second best closet?

GCarriger-TimelessTimeless (March 1, 2012)

Alexia Tarabotti, Lady Maccon, has settled into domestic bliss. Of course, being Alexia, such bliss involves integrating werewolves into London High society, living in a vampire’s second best closet, and coping with a precocious toddler who is prone to turning supernatural willy-nilly. Even Ivy Tunstell’s acting troupe’s latest play, disastrous to say the least, cannot put a damper on Alexia’s enjoyment of her new London lifestyle.

Until, that is, she receives a summons from Alexandria that cannot be ignored. With husband, child, and Tunstells in tow, Alexia boards a steamer to cross the Mediterranean. But Egypt may hold more mysteries than even the indomitable Lady Maccon can handle. What does the vampire Queen of the Alexandria Hive really want from her? Why is the God-Breaker Plague suddenly expanding? And how has Ivy Tunstell suddenly become the most popular actress in all the British Empire?

Hey Everyone! I have a great guest here today and Im also personally, giving away a copy of her latest book.

Please welcome the awesome Gail Carriger to my blog!

Enjoy!

GailParasolRosesSepia_VanessaApplegate

When did you first start writing?

My Mum used to read to me in bed and if I didn't like the end of the book I would explain to her very carefully that the author got it wrong and then inform her of thereal ending. That was the start of the madness.

Print What attracted you the Steam-punk genre?

I came to steampunk first as an aesthetic movement. I'm a longtime fan of vintage clothing and Goth style; steampunk drew me in as a cheerful melding of the two. I also love seeing recycled technology used as jewelry, and other examples of how creative the maker community can be.

In which genre do you think your Parasol Protectorate series fit into best?

Well they are mainly filed under science fiction / fantasy although some stores put them into romance and few have stuck them into horror. I consider my books a mix of steampunk and urban fantasy. I like Carrie Vaughn's term "urbane fantasy" which nicely incorporates both sub-genres. I like to spoof the original gothic classics so there is a good dose of comedy in them too – giggling readers are good.

Were there any Books, Movies or Writers that have inspired you?

The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams. The Eyre Affaire by Jasper Fforde. My strongest writing influences tend to be authors like Elisabeth Gaskell, Charles Dickens, and P. G. Wodehouse. I also watch a lot of BBC costume dramas.

What is your favorite subject to write about?

Anything that involves characterization and dialogue between outrageous or esoteric individuals.

Favorites:SteampunkAnthology

Favorite Paranormal themed Movie?

I haven't seen it yet. I'm hoping it will be Adele Blanc-sec

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a6djPGS3RCA

(I will say I have a soft spot for the first Underworld movie.)

Favorite Paranormal themed TV Show?

Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

Favorite Paranormal themed Book?

Oh, that's a hard one. I'm going to say Children of the Night by Mercedes Lackey.

Favorite Book Genre?

Comedy, closely followed by young adult fantasy. I also read a lot of space opera.

Favorite Author?

Tamora Pierce.

ChangelessFINAL Favorite one of your Books?

Which ever one is about to come out next, or the one I'm not writing but want to be. Never the one I'm currently working on.

Who is your favorite of your own characters? Why?

I adore Lord Akeldama because he is so deliciously fun to write – all that mad italic-wielding action.

Which was the hardest to write? Why?

Madame Lefoux. I think because her motives are often in question, and I really want her to be likeable.

What would you be if not a writer? Why?

I moonlight as an archaeologist. No really, that's the truth. Periodically I trundle off to the Peruvian Highlands or some such, where I analyze ceramics. I used to teach at university so I'd probably go back to doing that.

Quickies!

Coffee or Tea? Tea! Tea forever!

Up or Down? Strange.

Virtual or Real? Improbable.

Right or Left? Right.MBOPR2Final

Day or Night? Evening.

Vampires or Werewolves? Werewolves.

Reading or Writing? These days, writing. I miss reading.

What is your favorite part of the writing process?

The first pass editing when I get to utterly eviscerate my own writing, and the last pass editing after I've totally forgotten what I wrote and I get to realize it isn't as bad as I thought.

What is your least favorite part?

The nookie and the humor. I've written humor before so I knew I could, but never for a full-length novel. It's true what they say; it is harder to make people laugh than cry. I've never written anything approaching a romance before so that was very challenging too, I kept embarrassing myself.

The Parasol Protectorate series in your own words?

P.G. Wodehouse with vampires meets Jane Austen does steampunk.

BlamelessFINAL (1) How many books do you have planned for the series?

Five: Soulless, Changeless, Blameless, Heartless, Timeless

What is coming up next for you?

Blameless is out this September, then Heartless next year, and Timeless the year after that. I have a few side projects as well. The Steampunk Reloaded Anthology and the Mammoth book of Paranormal Romance II both come out this October.

What are you working on right now?

Heartless is due this November, so I'm working on that.

Do you have any advice or tip to those like me that want to become a published Author someday?

Honestly and rather crudely? 1. Sit your arse in that chair and write. 2. When you're done writing only then do you get to edit. 3. Give it to three highly critical people to attack with red pens. 4. Fix it and submit it. 5. Let it go, sit your arse back down and write something else as different from the first as possible. 6. Wash and repeat.

Anything you would like to say to your fans out there?

Thanks!

From Goodreads.

First and foremost, Happy Valentine's Day! Now that, that is out of the way... LOL

I feel like it took a journey for me to finish this book. It started so slow that it felt like hours were spent on a page and the damn story just did NOT move forward. I think the old sort of language and vocabulary takes a while to get used to too.

Well, I tried reading this book a few times and even took it with me to Italy. I read 3 other books while there and not this one, at all. On the flight back I was out of options and decided once and for all to dig into it and read it.

I have to say I am SO HAPPY I did. After such a rocky beginning, Soulless stole my heart and  made me a huge fan of Miss Alexia Tarabotti.

Alexia is a great heroine. She is in her mid twenties and lost in a society that sees her as a spinster. A woman full of character, a lot of attitude and with an enviable wit, she does not take lying down all the criticism directed at her. Miss Tarabotti is also a preternatural, Soulless and the natural enemy of the supernatural races. She makes Vampires and Werewolves powerless with just a touch.

Lord Conall Maccon is the Alpha werewolf of the London pack and also a member of The Bureau of Unnatural Registry (BUR), which would be like the CIA of the time. Conall is the epitome of the Alpha male hero and I loved his strength and personality.

"Alexia decided, then and there, that Lord Conall Maccon clearly had only two modes of operation: annoyed and aroused. She wondered which one she would prefer to deal with in a regular basis. Her body joined her in that discussion, and she actually managed to shock herself into continued silence."

Maccon and Alexia's chemistry was apparent from the get go and you couldn't help but root for them to stop being silly and just get together already. Being set in Victorian times its safe to say that the smut wasn't on a Demonica Series level for example, but the romance and sexier parts were very well done. I couldn't help but cheering on when they finally kissed for the first time.

"He was sure his control was around somewhere, if he could simply find it. He tore his eyes away from the tops of those remarkable breasts of hers and tried to think unpleasant thoughts of particularly horrible things, like overcooked vegetables and cut-rate wine."

Besides a very compelling romance, Soulless has a very interesting mystery going on. Vampires and Werewolves that live as rogues have been disappearing around London and its Lord Maccon's job to figure out what is going on and to his surprise, Alexia proves to be the perfect partner to help him, much to his chagrin.

I love this book and I am really glad that I gave it a chance in the end. The only negative for me was the slow start, after that I can say that it became one of my favorites. I am really looking forward to the second book in this series, "Changeless" coming out on March 30th!
