Someone asked me the other day if my books were for teens or adults. No doubt about it, I write my books for adult readers, since there is explicit sex and violence in all of them. Of course, in today’s world, those things certainly don’t limit the audience to adults, and in truth I have plenty of older teen readers, too. But I still say I write my books for adults. Because the stories aren’t only about the sex and violence. My characters are all adults, not just in age, but in experience.
Teenagers, and I know this from personal experience having been one, think the world begins and ends with their own drama and don’t look beyond that. And, yes, I know, there are many teenagers who do wonderful things in the community, who give selflessly of their time to others. I know many of them personally. But there’s nothing intrinsically wrong with being a selfish teenager, either. Being a teenager can be hell, but teen angst is all part of the process. Teenagers think the world will end if one doesn’t make the team, go to the prom, get the date or the latest fashion accessory.
Adults know the world won’t end. That would be too easy. The world will go on and so will you, and you’ll have to find a way to live with the reality of losing your job, or not getting that promotion, of discovering someone you love doesn’t love you anymore, or even worse losing someone you love to the immutable force that is death. Tragedy isn’t that the world will end. Tragedy is living with the knowledge that it won’t.
My characters have all seen what a crap place the world can sometimes be and soldiered on. Many of them have experienced true, personal loss and kept going. My vampire Sophia suffered an unimaginable loss before she was turned, one no person should ever have to endure. But that loss is what led to her becoming a vampire and shaped who she would become hundreds of years later.
The very human Cynthia Leighton grew up with everything money could buy, but not a single person to show her how to love, and yet she’s one of the most loyal and loving of friends. Because she values what she never had until she went out into the world and found it for herself. Sarah Stratton was betrayed by her family, locked away in an institution while still a teenager, because they didn’t want to deal with the embarrassment of her psychic ability.
But she went on to make something of herself, leaving behind everything and everyone she knew, putting herself through college and graduate school and moving far away to start a new life, coping not just with the stress of daily life, but a truly horrific psychic talent. That takes guts and strength and determination, the kind that only comes after someone has walked through the fire and come out the other side. And when it comes to literally walking through fire, Navy SEAL Colin Murphy has seen the very worst humanity has to offer, but the very best in the men he fought beside, too.
And like Sophia, none of my vampires started out as the powerful Vampire Lords they are now. They didn’t come close to death, only to wake up the next morning the most powerful creatures on earth. They each clawed their way to the top of the pile, some of them surviving personal tragedy, others a predatory Sire they had to destroy in order to find freedom. And there were always plenty of vampires far stronger than they were at the beginning of their new lives, too. Sometimes they were forced to submit, sometimes to fight, in order to stay alive, but always they were determined that one day they would be the one on top, the one other vampires looked to for life itself.
And that’s why I write for adults, not just for the hot sex scenes, or even the glee my vampires take in hunting down and torturing their enemies, although I love writing each and every one of those scenes! But because I’m interested in the adult experience, the decisions and compromises they’re forced to make and the consequences they live with, the strength of emotions forged in fire. So, if you’re looking for sex, violence and action, you’ll find it in my stories, but don’t be surprised if there’s some genuine adult angst right there alongside it.
