Virtual Book Journey: ARC Review of Deeper Than Midnight {Midnight Breed #9} by Lara Adrian

0000000 deeper-than-midnight1

Delivered from the darkness, a woman finds herself plunged into a passion that is Deeper Than Midnight.

At eighteen, Corinne Bishop was a beautiful, spirited young woman living a life of privilege as the adopted daughter of a wealthy family. Her world changed in an instant when she was stolen away and held prisoner by the malevolent vampire Dragos.

After many years of captivity and torment, Corinne is rescued by the Order, a cadre of vampire warriors embroiled in a war against Dragos and his followers. Her innocence taken, Corinne has lost a piece of her heart as well - the one thing that gave her hope during her imprisonment, and the only thing that matters to her now that she is free.

Assigned to safeguard Corinne on her trip home is a formidable golden-eyed Breed male called Hunter. Once Dragos's most deadly assassin, Hunter now works for the Order, and he's hell-bent on making Dragos pay for his manifold sins. Bonded to Corinne by their mutual desire, Hunter will have to decide how far he'll go to end Drago's reign of evil - even if carrying out his mission means shattering Corinne's tender heart.

*Minor Series Spoilers, NO Spoilers for Deeper Than Midnight.

Here we are, 9 books in and we finally get Hunter’s story. Hunter is a Breed male created to be a warrior for the evil Dragos. A few books ago we witnessed him changing sides and becoming a part of the warrior group that fights protect the civilian Breeds and keep the peace and now, in Deeper Than Midnight, he finally gets his HEA.

In Taken by Midnight we saw the Breed Mates take charge and save a lot of Breed Mates that had been kept captive for a long time. One of these females was Corinne. Corinne has gone through all kinds of hell, now she just wants to go home and it’s Hunter’s job to make sure she gets there safe. However that turns out to be a much harder job than once believed.

I have been looking forward Hunter’s story for a long time and was happy to finally seeing Hunter evolve from a cold and hardened warrior to the man he deserves to be and have the happiness he deserves to have.

On the background of Corinne and Hunter’s journey, Sterling Chase got quite a lot of stage time and even though I love the man, I felt that him getting so much spotlight was in detriment of Hunter and Corinne’s story. The ending felt rushed and incomplete when it comes to the main two characters’ HEA and since it is a Paranormal Romance novel, it bothered me some.

I have to say that I did enjoy the book quite a lot and I am looking forward to Chase’s story, I just wished Hunter and Corinne had had more stage time, it was their book after all.

Quickie Series-Catch-Up Reviews: Taken by Midnight {MB #8} by Lara Adrian & Dead Reckoning {SS #11} by Charlaine Harris

Taken by Midnight (Midnight Breed #8)

AT THE CROSSROADS OF DEATH AND DESIRE, A WOMAN TASTES A PLEASURE NO MORTAL IS MEANT TO SURVIVE.

In the frozen Alaskan wilderness, former state trooper Jenna Darrow survives an unspeakable breach of body and soul. But with her narrow escape comes an even greater challenge. For strange changes are taking place within her, as she struggles to understand—and control—a new hunger. To do so, she will seek shelter in the Boston compound of the Order, an ancient race of vampire warriors whose very existence is shrouded in mystery. Perhaps the most mysterious of them all is Brock, a brooding, dark-eyed alpha male whose hands hold the power to comfort, heal . . . and arouse.

As she recovers under Brock’s care, Jenna finds herself drawn to the Order’s mission: to stop a ruthless enemy and its army of assassins from subjecting Earth to a reign of terror. Yet in spite of their resolve, a purely physical relationship without strings soon binds Brock and Jenna together with a desire fiercer than life and stronger than death itself—until a secret from Brock’s past and Jenna’s own mortality challenges their forbidden love to the ultimate trial by fire.

The Good: Loved Brock and Jenna with passion. Great characters and the plot was very well constructed. Loved how the Breed Mates are so involved and active! Kick-Ass! =D

The Bad: Brock was pretty much a background character for a while, so it took me a while to care for him.

The Romance: Quite the steamy affair Jenna and Brock have, very enjoyable!

Dead Reckoning (Sookie Stackhouse, #11)

With her knack for being in trouble's way, Sookie witnesses the firebombing of Merlotte's, the bar where she works. Since Sam Merlotte is now known to be two-natured, suspicion falls immediately on the anti-shifters in the area. But Sookie suspects otherwise and she and Sam work together to uncover the culprit - and the twisted motive for the attack. But her attention is divided. Though she can't 'read' vampires, Sookie knows her lover Eric Northman and his 'child' Pam well - and she realises that they are plotting to kill the vampire who is now their master. Gradually, she is drawn into the plot -which is much more complicated than she knows. Caught up in the politics of the vampire world, Sookie will learn that she is as much of a pawn as any ordinary human - and that there is a new Queen on the board . . .

The Good: Fun and it fits like your favorite shirt would. =)

The Bad: While I was reading it, someone asked me what I was thinking of it, I said: “not sure... it feels like an old shirt you have always loved. It is comfortable and you can't help but wear it, but it's far from effective =/”

That’s exactly how it felt for me. I think it’s time to wrap this series up, though I have to say that I will miss this world and characters dearly!

The Romance: Knowing Eric is not Sookie’s HEA, takes some of the fun out, but he is still awesome!
