Lala’s Book Corner Presents: Author Interview w/ J.A. Saare!

Hey guys! I know it’s Wednesday and not interview day here at the blog, but I have a cool treat for you. Author J.A. Saare was super kind to answer my questions, so this week I have two interviews for you =)

I have yet to read her UF novel, Dead, undead and Somewhere in Between, but it’s on my shelf and it looks awesome! She also writes Paranormal Romance, and Erotica as Aline Hunter.

Enjoy!

When did you first start writing?

J.A Saare: I started writing in June of 2008. I remember it because it was summertime, all of the kids were home, and the Twilight frenzy had just begun.

Have you always enjoyed Fantasy?

J.A Saare: Absolutely. When I started reading headier stuff in my teens, one of my favorite authors was Piers Anthony. His Incarnations of Immorality series rocked my world and made one hell of an impression.

Why writing Urban Fantasy?

J.A Saare: It’s what appeals to me, what lures me away from romance and horror, which makes sense when you think about it. You can have a bit of both in your urban fantasy and no one will complain.

Were there any Books, Movies or Writers that have inspired you?

J.A Saare: Wow, that’s a huge box of candy. There are so many movies -- The Evil Dead, The Bride, The Company of Wolves, American Werewolf in London, Fright Night, Sundown: The Vampire in Retreat -- and books -- The Anita Blake series, Incarnations of Immortality series -- and authors -- L.J. Smith, Stephen King, Dean Koontz, Laurell K. Hamilton, Kathleen Woodiwiss -- to mention them all (even though I did list a few notables).

What is your favorite subject in the Urban Fantasy Realm?

J.A Saare: It can be anything and that’s what’s wonderful about the genre, it’s so diverse. I love magic, I love creatures that grow fur, sprout fangs, and howl at the moon, and I love those nocturnal vamps that can turn you on or terrify you, depending on their mood.

v_castFavorites:

Favorite Paranormal themed Movie?

J.A Saare: I’ve always been partial to Fright Night, although The Company of Wolves and Near Dark run a close second.

Favorite Paranormal themed TV Show?

J.A Saare: Of all time? Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Now? V.

Favorite Paranormal themed Book?

J.A Saare: Beloved Vampire by Joey W. Hill. =)

Favorite Author?

J.A Saare: Same as above. I recently got to chat with her at the Lori Foster gathering and it was hard not to gush like a giddy school girl.

Favorite Paranormal Romance Author?

J.A Saare: One again, gotta go with Joey. Thus far I have loved each and every story she has written.

Favorite one of your Books?

J.A Saare: East of Eden by John Steinbeck. I read it once per year, usually during the summer or fall.

Who is your favorite of your own characters?

J.A Saare: That’s Rhiannon (from Dead, Undead, or Somewhere in Between). She is an amazing (and fun) character who is always an enormous relief to return to. I often refer to writing her as “going home” because her voice is always there, no matter where I go or how long it’s been since I’ve placed her to paper. She’s quite literally the only character I’ve written that I can get in touch with instantly.

Which was the hardest to write? Why?

J.A Saare: Right now, I’d say Emma (from Crimson Moon). She was the first  character I’d ever written and my writing has evolved and become so much more mature that it’s difficult to find that innocent mindset and revert to it.

What would you be if not a writer? Why?

J.A Saare: My aspiration was to be a teacher, which could very well happen. We’ll just have to wait and see how this writing thing pans out. I love kids, even if I rant on Twitter about my own (it’s all in good fun). They keep you young.

Quickies:CrimsonMoon_w4350_680

Coffee or Tea?

J.A Saare: Coffee

Up or Down?

J.A Saare: Up

Virtual or Real?

J.A Saare: Real

Right or Left?

J.A Saare: Left

Night or Day?

J.A Saare: Night

Vampires or Werewolves?

J.A Saare: Werewolves

Angels or Demons?

J.A Saare: Demons

Friends or Seinfeld?

J.A Saare: Seinfeld

Rolling Stones or The Beatles?

J.A Saare: The Beatles

Reading or Writing?

coverJ.A Saare: Writing (this one got me, I confess -- I did a double take.)

What is your favorite part of the writing process?

J.A Saare: Creating new stories and characters.

What is your least favorite part?

J.A Saare: Editing. Don’t get me wrong, I adore my editor (Mary at Loose Id has been working with me for the past few months on my PNR, Eternity and a Day, and her knowledge has been invaluable -- I've learned so much) but it’s hard work, especially when you get someone who knows her stuff and teaches you the ropes.

Dead, Undead or Somewhere in Between in your own words?

J.A Saare: Let’s see… Dark, campy, a bit serious and somber, with a heroine you’ll love or hate depending on your mood. It’s a book that’s intended to be easy to read, without all the filler. Although I should say that I’m shocked at how well received Disco (the hero) has become.

Any plans for a sequel?

J.A Saare: I’m writing it as we speak. The Renfield Syndrome should be completed at some point in the fall.

What is coming up next for you?

J.A Saare: I have a paranormal romance, Crimson Moon, releasing June 25th at The Wild Rose Press, as well as an erotic paranormal romance, Eternity and a Day, releasing under my alter-ego, Aline Hunter, at Loose Id on July 6th.

What are you working on right now?Discobutton

J.A Saare: An extremely hot paranormal romance entitled Omega Mine. It’s been one of the most difficult stories I’ve ever worked on but things are shaping up and I think it’s worth it. It’s an erotic PNR with a slightly different take on shifters. I recently finished the manuscript but have to correct a few things here and there.

Do you have any advice or tip to those like me that want to become a published Author someday?

J.A Saare: Just go for it. I know some people delay because they are afraid of rejection or that people won’t get their voice, their work, or what they want to put out there. You won’t know until you try, and honestly, what have you got to lose?

Anything you would like to say to your fans out there?

J.A Saare: I adore you seems contrite, but it’s true. I should probably give a shout out to my Twitter peeps who keep the drive to write alive and make sure I keep the fingers on the keyboard!

Thank you so much for being here!

J.A Saare: Thanks for having me!! It was great to visit your blog and share. =)
