Storytellers … Born or Made?

BURNING DARKNESS, Book Four of the Offspring Series

By Jaime Rush

RT Book Reviews and Night Owl Reviews Top Picks!

Fonda Raine lives for one thing: killing Eric Aruda for slaying her lover. But she'll have to be careful--Eric can set fires with his mind. Seconds from plunging a knife into his heart, an assassin tries to take them both out. Now, she must choose: join forces with the man who's burning through her defenses or go down in flames.

People often wonder how one becomes a fiction writer. We writers are, after all, curious things. Half the time, or more, we live in a make-believe world and talk to people who don’t exist. People are committed for stuff like that. Or given meds. I believe writers are born storytellers. Some writers don't come into it until later in life. Maybe they've stuffed that desire due to a fear of being ridiculed or failing, or because their lives went in different directions. Deep down inside, though, I think that drive and talent is there right from the beginning. It's our purpose in life, I'd even venture to say. Those who wait until, say, the kids go off to college, find that purpose niggling, pushing, and then downright kicking them in the butt to get writing.

Fortunately, I loved telling stories as soon as I could put words together. I directed plays with my neighborhood friends, complete with bad guys chasing us all over. Forget baby dolls. You can only feed them and change their diapers…but Barbie dolls, a girl can have some real fun with. They can love, hate, marry, cheat, and murder. Yeah, I know—I was a strange kid. My first story, at least the one we found, was called "Pathways to Death." Somehow I was always drawn to the dark side of human nature.

As I grew older, I started writing short stories that I sent out to different publications. Then I got an idea that was too long for a short story. I was off and running! Even though I worked full-time, I spent as much free time as possible writing. As soon as one book was out to editors and/or agents, I was already starting another one. I treated my writing as my job, whether it was paying me or not. I was prepared for when I actually did get a contract, and later, for my full-time career.

The curious thing about writers is, we can’t not write. I have friends who have written five, eight, ten books without selling a one. But they keep writing because they have to. So if you see someone walking down the street with a strange glint in their eyes, maybe even mumbling to themselves, they might not be crazy …they may be a writer. And that writer may be you!

And for something fun! I'm celebrating the release of BURNING DARKNESS with my Kick Butt First Line contest. Shocking, suspenseful…make us want more! Cash prizes! Contest runs from Feb 1 through March 1, 2011. For aspiring authors, it's a chance to get your name out there and add a "win" to your bio. For readers, it's a chance to play at being a writer. Even if you're not inclined to write a line, check out the entries—they're a lot of fun! For details, go to www.JaimeRush.com and click on the Contest link.

Oh how important and grown up I felt and getting the little postcard in the mail letting me know that the book I had requested was waiting for me. Wow that feeling was great. Still is the excitement and anticipation and pride when I get to be the first person who requested it course now I get emails but still I love books always have always will.
