Reading Across the Genre Spectrum

First things first: a huge thank you to Larissa for having me here today as part of the blog tour for my upcoming Carina Press release, PARADISE FOUND.

Followed by a warning up front: PARADISE FOUND isn't for everyone. It's a gay erotic romance (and right there, I know I've lost a few of you), but it goes further than that. The book is also a ménage (I'm waving goodbye to a few more readers with that one) and it explores some BDSM themes (yikes, there goes the rest of the crowd!).

Anyone still with me? Good! I'll try to make it worth your while.

I'm not going to convince you to give my book a shot if it's not your thing, but I do want to talk about our reading preferences, choices, and habits.

I'm an eclectic reader. If you were to look at my colossal To Be Read mountain, you'd find a wide variety of books. Here's just a small sample of the paperbacks and e-books waiting on my nightstand:

    Hot Stuff, by Carly Phillips

    Reiffen's Choice, by S.C. Butler

    Enchantment, by Kathleen Nance

The Loving Dominant, by John and Libby Warren

Snowball in Hell, by Josh Lanyon

The Mile High Club Anthology from Cleis Press

Lord of the Rose, by Douglas Niles

The Passion Test, by Janet and Chris Attwood

And again, that's just a small sample. But you see what I mean? I'm all over the board. One day I'll be reading a huge fantasy tome, and the next I'll find myself in the mood for a scorching BDSM threesome, or a psychology textbook. You just never know with me. Neither does my husband, who continually marvels at the stuff I read. He's a big science fiction and fantasy fan, with the occasional foray into men's action adventure, but he stays pretty close within his comfort zone.

I'm interested in hearing from you.

Do you only read in one genre, or do you bounce across a handful?

Do you ever explore different genres?

And if so, what makes you pick up a book that might otherwise be way outside your comfort zone?

If you're still with me -- and a big thank you to those of you who are! -- here's a blurb of PARADISE FOUND, so you know what you're getting into.

ParadiseFoundFinal

Paradise is just an illusion…
Or so Philip thinks as he vacations on exotic Anguilla. He should be celebrating the end of law school and the start of his successful career, but he's tired of living a lie for his family's sake. For just one night, he lets down his guard with two men he thinks he'll never see again.

He isn't the only one with secrets. For years, Cameron Drake has suppressed his need for dominance, afraid of hurting his lover, Mark Wilder. But when Cameron's hand meets Philip's ass, there's no more pretending. Mark can't face his conflicting feelings about the ménage; does Cameron want more than Mark can give?

The three of them may have been perfect together but consequences follow them back to their real lives. Will their desire for another encounter shatter the illusions they've built to protect themselves or clear the obstacles to paradise?

PARADISE FOUND will be available at

Carina Press, Amazon,

and other online retailers on June 6.

  3. I tend to read in different genres of romance or young adult or newspaper articles on topics I want to know about. I rarely stray - unless it's an assignment. I find fiction to be more interesting than anything else.

I read across many genres. I love paranormal romance, as well as just paranormal, urban fantasy, fantasy, science fiction, historical, contemporary, mystery (even the occasional "cozy"), action adventure, spy novels, thrillers, horror. There's not actually much I don't read depending on my mood. I absolutely love m/m romance and menage stories. A good BDSM is always a fun read. I can't wait to get a copy of Paradise Found!

You know I'm a member of Total Exposure and "like" you on Facebook. However, I don't tweet...lol

    Hi Hunter ;)
I mostly read contemps, rom. susp. & erotica. My new love is M/M. I will try outside my genres if one of my faves writes it. Looking forward to reading Paradise Found. Been reading numerous articles on why we love M/M. In romance, I love the male POV too. This way you get 2 & sometimes 3 POVs LOL.

I'm in your Yahoo group, friended you on FB. Sorry I'm not a twit though LOL.

I stay pretty much inside my comfort zone. Fortunately my comfort zone is pretty spacious :) Might be even more so if I actually ever get around to tackling the ominously looming minor mountain of TBR books.
Currently, I'm pretty stoked by steampunk :)

  8. The main genre I read is Paranormal, but I pretty much like anything that has romance and passion. I haven't read an m/m book yet - though I have one by Stacey Kennedy that I will be reviewing soon. I'd love to enter this giveaway :)I've friended you on facebook, and I'm following you on twitter! I read all kinds of genres, it really just depends on my mood. I also tend to stick with an author whose writing style really works for me, and will read any stories that they write (JD Robb/Nora Roberts), as an example.

I really enjoy your Lacey books,so thanks for the chance to check out your Hunter stories.

I bounce around the entire fiction world. I don't leave anything untouched. It's really great, that way I don't get bored.

The last time I branched out and tried something new was Feed by Mira Grant. I didn't think I'd like it, but I LOVED it. I can't wait for the sequel.

So because of that, I always try anything.

  13. I often read a bit of everything, though it left out scary books, religious, and some erotic books whether or not GLBT.
But sometimes I get books from the publishers but I have not requested, then ponder the issues.
    Is it a children's book? I'll try.
Is it a book of terror? I leave it untouched.
Is it a young adult's book? Read reviews first and seek comments from people who have similar tastes to mine. If your review will give more than 3 points, I put on my TBR pile.
Is it an erotic book? Seeking information about the author, see what kind of books written in the erotic genre and if I want, I take it.
Is it a GLBT book? I take it only if the extract is striking. If offer something new or something that awakens my curiosity.
I avoid some books where sexual practices are taken to the limit (I read BDSM). As it is not something to be said in extracts often, not in the reviews, I try, but when I come to a stage to consider a little disgusting, not open a book the author again.

    Thanks for the chance!

Back in the day I used to bounce around a lot more with different book genres, it seems nowadays I am almost a strict YA reader (which is a booger since I am missing out on some other rally great books out there- I will have to make more of an effort to read other genres).
