ABOUT THE NORTH –Part Two

Hi again! Wow, the blog we’re visiting is in Brazil, and I’m going to be talking about the north. Like in the far far far north this time. Get ready for a loooooong trip!

The Takhini Wolves and Granite Lake are set in the north, and I thought it would be cool (heheh) to talk about exactly how remote this area is. The northern parts of Canada, US, Greenland, Russia, Scandinavia are BIG. As in really BIG. I think this is made more apparent by how isolated and empty a lot of the space really is. People do live there, though, and animals. And there’s a lot of resources such as oil, and even fresh water that makes these parts of the world not only great places for stories, but important to the
world.

I think shifters would love to live some of these places. Think about it—far enough away from civilization they could be more open about their dual natures, and yet with the resources to proved an income so their human sides could enjoy a living as well. The best of both worlds, and one of the reasons I set my Granite Lake and Takhini series in the far
north.

In BLACK GOLD, the heroine Gem is coming from a bit of an isolated background as well, only she’s used to living in the middle of a far more populated area. There’s a good reason for her to be sheltered, but coming to the north is a hug adventure for her. Just imagine. When you’re out hiking in some parts of the Yukon, you could literally walk for
days without seeing another person.

One thing that is interesting is that in spite of the remote location, there are people who for one reason or another live far away from everyone else. During the 1950’s a series of small radar stations were set up right along the extreme northern edge of Alaska and the Yukon. It was called the Distant Early Warning Line, or DEW Line. This was in the era of political tension between the then USSR and the United States, and the line was meant to be an eyes and ears to warn if any kind of hostile move was made by going over the arctic cap.

Talk about isolated. The northern edge of the world. Some stations were manned for years before being abandoned or converted into scientific research bases. The extreme weather conditions these stations face means there’s not a lot left of many of them now, over 50 years later.

You want to take a holiday somewhere very very quiet? How about this beautiful spot right on the artic Ocean on Nuvagapak Point?

You want to visit?

For 13 days the wolfies will be traveling around the world in preparation for the release of Black Gold. It’s the next story in the Granite Lake world, but a novel– so we’ll be meeting Shaun and Gem and the wolfies of the Takhini pack, along with cameos from the GL wolves.

The tour will begin September 1st and visit these awesome blogs:

Sept 1-2 Feeling Fictional: England

Sept 3-4 Pearl’s World of Romance: Holland

Sept 5-6 Ex Libris: Hungary

Sept 7-8 Larissa’s Bookish Life: Brazil

Sept 9-10 The Book Pushers: USA

Sept 11-12 My Disorganized Ramblings: Canada

September 13 all the sites will have a release day post, and on the 14th we’ll announce the grand prize winner of a $50 gift certificate chosen from the comments at the various sites.

MEANWHILE, on Viv’s blog there will be visiting “Friends of the Wolfies“. A chance to win great paranormal books from authors like Lauren Dane, Moira Rogers, Thea Harrison, Vivi Andrews, Kinsey Holley, Vivi Anna.

The details  (ie those boring things called RULES) are on THIS page. Then you can work your way through the posts and tour locations. Good luck, and I hope you have fun finding out about the new book and meeting some special friends of mine.

No i don't think i would want to visit

  2. emmad says:

I wouldn't want to visit either lol. I like being by myself a bit (very happy when partner goes away for a weekend lol) but that would be a bit much. Though in saying that if I had the right supplies and an internet connection along with my dog I could cope for a couple of weeks.

  3. I wouldn't mind staying there if I had a good book, hot water and instant coffee.

  4. Lexi says:

Oh I would be there in a heart beat!! I love the winter (live in MN and love it sept through may) and I adore Siberian Huskies (as my profile picture indicates) especially my big fur ball. What better place to be than way north in the crisp air, some sled dogs, and wolves....with secrets. Sounds perfect to me!
Can't wait to find this book! Hope it does very well for you!

No, I couldn't do it. Although solitude has it's good qualities I need to know there are people and stores around if I need them :) And the cold I couldn't deal with at all because of the havoc it would be on my back.God bless anyone who could stay isolated like that.

I'm the type of gal who doesn't judge a book by it's cover. I need to take a look inside, then I'll make final decision. You never know there might be a 5 star style spa lodge hidden in that not-so-nice exterior. :) Thanks for the giveaway!

  14. Lisa J says:

Not for me either. It's just me and the pups at home and I don't need anymore alone time than that.

  15. Peace and serenity sounds wonderful-though I would want to bring my doggie too! Thank you for the awesome post. edysicecreamlover18@gmailDOTcom

  16. I would check it out got s day or two. I would need some "creature" comforts, though, like books and cheap wine.

  46. I think it'd be cool to visit and camp out there as long as I have some strong and warm gear and lots of comfort snacks like smores lol. But that trailer looks grungy so that's why I'd wanna try a tent first. Of course once nightfall hits with cold wind I'd probably sing a different tune:P
